Achalasia is a rare disorder in which the lower oesophagal sphincter fails to function normally. It is frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to those of other digestive disorders. The oesophageal sphincter is a muscle that allows food to pass from the oesophagus into the stomach by relaxing. Achalasia causes the sphincter to lose function and relax incorrectly. Achalasia can also prevent food from passing normally through the oesophagus and into the stomach (known as peristalsis). It is caused by nerve damage to the oesophageal muscles. During the POEM procedure, an endoscope is inserted through your mouth and down your throat to make an incision in the lining of your oesophagus. The lower oesophageal sphincter muscle is then cut to allow food to enter the stomach more easily. This procedure is relatively painless and does not require any surgical incisions.
