POEM is an endoscopic surgical intervention used to treat esophageal motility disorders, most commonly Achalasia Cardia. Achalasia Cardia is a motility disorder marked by spasm (or) failure of the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, resulting in an impaired flow of ingested food into the stomach. Common achalasia symptoms include difficulty swallowing, nasal regurgitation of undigested food, nocturnal cough, chest pain, heartburn, and weight loss. Endoscopy and manometry are used to diagnose it. Achalasia Cardia was traditionally treated with a surgical procedure known as Hellers Myotomy. Per oral endoscopic myotomy has recently become a widely accepted treatment in which the entire procedure is performed endoscopically with no scars. POEM is a highly safe and effective long-term treatment for achalasia and other spastic disorders of the esophagus.
