It affects both sexes equally and, while it can occur at any age, the peak incidence occurs between the ages of 30 and 70. Achalasia typically develops over time. To push food down towards the stomach, the oesophageal muscles contract and relax alternately (a process known as peristalsis). The lower end of the esophagus is connected to the stomach by a ring-like muscular valve (lower oesophageal sphincter), which relaxes to allow food to enter the stomach. There is an issue with both processes in Achalasia. The oesophageal muscles do not contract and relax properly, and the ring-like muscular valve does not relax or only partially relaxes, causing food to become trapped at the base of the food pipe, causing discomfort and unpleasant symptoms.
