The POEM procedure is considered minimally invasive. It is used to treat a variety of esophageal disorders. Achalasia is the most common of these disorders. It is carried out in an operating room. General anesthesia is used to put you to sleep. Your doctor will insert a thin, flexible tube down into your throat while you are asleep. Then an incision is made and a tunnel is created between the layers of the esophagus to reach the tight lower esophageal muscle. Following the creation of the tunnel, your doctor will make an incision (called a myotomy) in the lower muscle. This is a long-term cut. It creates a channel through which liquids and foods can freely pass. The main advantage of POEM is a faster recovery time. There are no cuts or scars on the outside of the body from this procedure.
