PERORAL ENDOSCOPIC MYOTOMY

PERORAL ENDOSCOPIC MYOTOMY, as the name suggests, is a highly specialized procedure used to treat Achalasia Cardia. For the treatment of Achalasia Cardia, surgery was previously performed to cut the muscles located at the LOWER esophagal SPHINCTER. Rather than performing surgery, the Esophageal muscles are cut through the Endoscopic route in this procedure. Special instruments are used to create a tunnel beneath the mucosa of the esophagus, 5-7 cm above the level of the GE junction. Once the muscle layer of the Lower sphincter is reached through this tunnel, muscles are cut using the micro-dissection technique (MAYOTOMY). POEM produces a long-lasting and durable response, providing lifelong relief from this disease. POEM is the most recent technology for the treatment of Achalasia Cardia. Achalasia Cardia is an esophageal motility disorder, not a cardiac condition. The esophageal valve either does not relax in response to food or contracts paradoxically. As a result, food cannot be passed from the food pipe to the stomach. As a result, the patient experiences a variety of symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and food regurgitation.
