ACHALASIA TREATMENT

The rare condition known as achalasia makes it challenging for food and liquids to flow from the oesophagus, which connects your mouth and stomach, into your stomach. As a result of oesophagal nerve injury, achalasia develops. As a result, the oesophagus gradually loses its ability to force food into the stomach and becomes paralysed and dilated. The food then builds up in the oesophagus, where it may ferment or wash back up into the mouth with a bitter flavour. This is sometimes misdiagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, in GERD the food comes from the stomach, whereas in achalasia the food comes from the oesophagus. Achalasia has no treatment available. Once the oesophagus is paralysed, the muscle is unable to function normally once more. However, endoscopy, a minimally invasive treatment, or surgery is typically effective in managing symptoms.
