Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy

A treatment called peroral endoscopic myotomy is performed to address swallowing abnormalities brought on by muscular issues including esophageal spasms. For esophageal myotomy, POEM uses an endoscope, a small, flexible tube with a camera that is placed into the mouth (peroral). By cutting the muscles, you can avoid them from tightening up and getting in the way of your ability to swallow. Since there is no skin incision during POEM, it is not regarded as a surgical procedure. It is a less invasive option to Heller myotomy, a comparable technique that enters the esophagus through small incisions rather than the mouth. Compared to traditional surgical treatments, endoscopic operations frequently result in less pain and a quicker recovery. POEM is primarily used to treat achalasia, a condition in which the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach is very tight. Due to the inability of this muscle to relax and other esophageal muscles to assist in moving food down, esophageal achalasia patients are unable to enable food to pass into the stomach. This may result in weight loss and nutrient deficits, coughing or choking, sore throat, food being stuck in the esophagus, and even choking.
