The tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach is the oesophagus, sometimes referred to as the food pipe. When someone has achalasia, the oesophagus has a harder time getting food to the stomach. There is a muscular ring where the oesophagus and stomach meet. Its formal term is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This muscle normally relaxes as you swallow to allow food to reach your stomach. In people with achalasia, it does not relax as it should. Additionally, the normal peristalsis of the oesophagus is decreased or absent. The cause of this problem is damage to the esophageal nerves. Other illnesses include upper stomach or esophageal cancer, Chagas disease, and parasite infections can also result in similar symptoms.
