Gastroenterology is a specialty of medicine that focuses on digestive system problems. Gastroenterologists are responsible for diagnosing and treating disorders affecting the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. Some of the most common disorders they have to deal with are GERD, gastric and duodenal ulcers, malignant tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal cancer, and rectal abnormalities. Obstetrics was historically the domain of women's midwives (see midwifery), but beginning in the 17th century, European doctors began attending to normal deliveries for royal and aristocratic households. From there, the profession grew and spread to the middle classes.
