Peroral endoscopic myotomy is a treatment used to treat swallowing abnormalities caused by muscular issues such as esophageal spasms. POEM cuts esophageal muscles with an endoscope, which is a narrow flexible tube with a camera that is placed into the mouth (peroral) (a myotomy). Cutting the muscles loosens them and keeps them from contracting and impeding swallowing. Because no incision is made through the skin, POEM is not considered surgery. It is a less invasive surgery than Heller myotomy, which employs small incisions to reach the esophagus rather than entry through the mouth. Endoscopic operations are frequently less painful and result in a speedier recovery than open surgical procedures.
