gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that focuses on disorders of the digestive system. Diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, biliary tract, and pancreas are the responsibilities of gastroenterologists. GERD, gastric and duodenal ulcers, malignant tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal cancer, and rectal abnormalities are a few of the most prevalent conditions they have to deal with. Obstetrics, which treats pregnant patients, and gynecology, which treats female genital problems, both have distinct historical development pathways. Obstetrics had previously been the domain of women's midwives (see midwifery), but in the 17th century, European doctors started attending to routine deliveries for royal and aristocratic families. From that point on, the profession developed and spread to the middle classes. Major developments in obstetrical practice include the development of delivery forceps, anesthesia, Ignaz Semmelweis's identification of the root cause of puerperal ("childbed") fever, and his introduction of antiseptic techniques in the delivery room.
