The only purpose of the esophagus is to carry food from the mouth to the stomach, where digestion can start. A coordinated, sequential motility pattern is necessary for the esophagus to transport food efficiently while also clearing acid and bile reflux from below. The delivery of food and fluid is restricted when this highly integrated muscular motion is disturbed, and chest pain and an unwelcome sense of dysphagia also result. According to their abnormal manometric patterns, esophageal motility disorders are referred to as primary or secondary esophageal motility disorders. The use of substances that either lower (anti-cholinergic substances, nitrates, calcium antagonists) or increase (prokinetic substances) esophageal contractility is used in the medical treatment of esophageal motility disorders.
