Gastritis is a collective term for a group of diseases that have one thing in common: inflammation of the stomach lining. Inflammation of gastritis is usually the result of infection with the same bacteria that cause most stomach ulcers or the regular use of certain pain relievers. Too much alcohol can also contribute to gastritis.
Gastritis can come on suddenly or slowly over time. In some cases, gastritis can lead to ulcers and an increased risk of stomach cancer. However, for most people, gastritis is not serious and quickly improves with treatment.
