GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the muscular ring between the esophagus and stomach. This ring is called the lower esophageal sphincter. Acid reflux occurs because a valve at the end of your esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter, doesn't close properly when food reaches your stomach. The acidic backwash then flows back down the esophagus into the throat and mouth, giving it a sour taste.
