Esophageal Motility Disorders

Category Esophagus and Stomach Disorder

Esophageal Motility Disorders are often associated with chest pain and dysphagia. Achalasia is a disease of the lower esophageal sphincter and smooth muscle of the esophageal body. In achalasia, the lower esophageal sphincter does not normally relax during swallowing and the body of the esophagus does not undergo peristalsis. Unlike esophageal spasticity, achalasia can progress and result in significant morbidity. Pseudo-achalasia mimics achalasia in terms of symptoms but can be caused by infectious disease or malignancy.
