Colon cancer occurs when the cells lining the colon or rectum become abnormal and grow out of control. Since symptoms often only appear at an advanced stage, regular screening for colorectal cancer is important. Cancer that starts in the colon is called colon cancer while rectal cancer is called rectal cancer. Cancer that affects any of these organs may be called colon cancer.
